Immersive Language Experience
At Empower, we aim to go beyond food, flags, and festivals when learning about the cultures of the world. Through our dual immersion Spanish and English program, students learn to embrace a variety of perspectives and ways of communicating. Early exposure to diverse languages, people, and ideas supports children’s ability to appreciate and understand their connection to the wider world.
Bilingualism supports empathy and caring, as well as clear communication. Children can understand why our differences exist, helping them remain open to multiple ways of doing and knowing. Language learning inspires accord and harmony, curiosity and tolerance, and camaraderie and understanding.
Our students not only learn two languages, but they also learn through language in our inquiry-based program. Students learn math, science, literacy, and fitness skills in both Spanish and English. We believe this has a profound effect on children’s brains, building cognitive muscles that support all areas of the brain, not just language.
Curriculum for a Global Village
Embedded in our curriculum are the 21st Century skills necessary for students to be competent, confident leaders in our multicultural world. Empathy, critical thinking, decision-making, and collaboration are all essential skills that can be applied in any setting.
Our inquiry-based projects are designed to strengthen critical thinking skills while providing opportunities for collaboration and taking action on local issues. Our fitness and gardening programs help students solve authentic problems. And our focus on writing across the curriculum creates powerful, effective communicators.
Empathy and understanding for one another, our local community, and our wider world are central to learning at Empower Language Academy. In everything we do, from community fundraisers to supporting new students to our program, we emphasize caring and compassion for the people of our world. We believe that students carry this trait beyond the walls of our classroom, enabling tolerance and respect for all people in our multicultural world.
Our talented teachers use the arts to bring the cultures of the world alive in our classrooms. One of our favorite multicultural learning events is our Multicultural and Fitness Gala. When it is safe to gather in large groups, we hold a school fundraiser that celebrates cultures of the world. Each class chooses a country or culture to highlight and spends weeks preparing their exhibit. Our classrooms turn into a museum and the children enjoy traveling the world through each classroom while learning songs and some of the unique qualities of that culture. It’s a wonderful way for us to celebrate our thematic learning and benefit the school!
