First Grade Teacher
First grade teacher Alfonsina Medellin has been a part of Empower Language Academy since its inception. Her first position was as a classroom aide and recess/lunch supervisor. She has worked hard to become a fully credentialed teacher for our first grade students! We are proud to have Maestra Medellin with our young students. Read on to find out a bit about what inspires her to teach the leaders of tomorrow.
When did you know you wanted to be an educator?
After working in the after school program and as a teacher’s assistant I realized I wanted to be an educator.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was Ms. Feinberg and she was my 4th grade teacher. She did a lot of hands-on projects that I enjoyed.
What makes Empower a special place to teach, learn and grow?
Empower is a special place to teach because I believe it is helping students preserve the language of their families and allows students to learn a new language. It is a special place to learn because everyday is different and I learn something new each day. Empower is a special place to grow because learning from my colleagues, the students and their families, allows me to grow as an educator.

Empower’s mission and vision align with my personal values because I provide students from all backgrounds with an educational experience that honors multilingualism and critical thinking.
What do you love most about your role?
I love seeing the aha moments when students understand something or learn something new.
