Inquiry-Based & Writing Centered
Empower Language Academy uses an inquiry-based model to encourage children to explore, question, and learn. Inquiry is a natural process of learning—you probably do it often without even realizing it!
Any time children (and adults!) have a question, we undertake a process of finding out—we ask questions, watch others do it, try it out, or read about it until we are satisfied with the answer. This cycle might happen repeatedly, especially if we are trying to learn a new skill (like riding a bike or learning to read!).
The benefit of using inquiry as our model for learning is that not only is it a natural process, but it’s powerful, motivating learning that can’t be undone or forgotten! We teach through inquiry units that incorporate art, music, social studies, and science. Technology is woven throughout our units as a tool to help us learn and create.
In our thematic units, writing is the bridge to all the content areas. We focus on writing skills within our projects and teach a variety of writing formats for real audiences such as emails, letter writing, descriptive stories, autobiographies, poetry, and much more. We teach the skills to help your child write clearly and creatively.
Our emphasis on writing develops strong, effective communicators. By writing on authentic topics, children learn to write to express themselves, show their thinking and knowledge, and for pleasure! Also, studies show that putting our learning into writing results in a deeper understanding of the concept: an all-around win for learning and growing.
Two-Way Language Immersion
As a dual immersion language school, teaching in both Spanish and English, we are creating a generation of nimble, flexible communicators. We view bilingualism as an invaluable strength that supports a child throughout their life.
All of our teachers at Empower Language Academy are bilingual and credentialed to teach in both languages. We build a strong foundation in a child’s first language in order to use language structures as they move into the second language or more complex texts and skills.
Up to 80% of our day is taught in Spanish in kindergarten and first grade. For each year after first grade, we increase English teaching so students will develop linguistically and academically in both languages.
