Important Back to School Updates!

Dear Empower Parent/Guardians,

Welcome back to another great year at Empower Charter! Our students’ academic growth was off the charts last year and we can’t wait to continue this great growth!

We held our annual orientation last Friday and important forms and information

Here are some frequently asked questions about each site, our Primary Grade Campus Grades K-1 at the Boys and Girls Club 2230 East Jewett St, San Diego CA 92111 and the Upper Grade Campus Grades 2-6 at Linda Vista Elementary School 2772 Ulric St, San Diego, CA 92111

Question: What is the earliest I can drop my child off? Are both sites open?

Answer: Yes, both sites are open at 7am for our before-school program.

Question: What if I don’t have access to a car and the Upper Grades Empower Campus at Linda Vista Elementary is farther for my family to walk?

Answer: For parents who don’t have transportation, you can drop off your child at the Boys and Girls Club by 7:40am, and a van will transport your child to Linda Vista Elementary School. We hired a licensed driver and are leasing the Boys and Girls Club’s van. The van will leave promptly each morning at 7:45am. If you miss this timeframe, please call the office and we can find a way to still assist with getting your child to school. On occasion, if the van breaks down, or the licensed driver is sick, we may walk the students over to Linda Vista. This would be a rare occurrence, and would be facilitated by an Empower staff member. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SIGN THE TRANSPORTATION AGREEMENT FORM provided by Empower.

Question: Where does my child go after-school?

Answer:

At the Primary Grades Campus at the Boys and Girls Club, grades K-1 are either picked up by their parent or they attend the Boys and Girls Club after-school program.

At the Upper Grades Campus at Linda Vista Elementary, if the children are not picked up by 3pm on a regular day or by 1pm on a minimum day, your child will go on the bus to the Boys and Girls Club’s after-school program. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SIGN THE TRANSPORTATION AGREEMENT FORM provided by Empower.

Question: Is there a cost for the transportation from Linda Vista Elementary to the Boys and Girls Club?

Answer: The school will cover the transportation cost.  The only cost to parents at the Linda Vista Elementary site are the membership fees.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB BEFORE MONDAY TO PAY ANY NEEDED FEES SO THAT EVERYTHING IS IN PLACE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS A MINIMUM DAY. IF YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY WITH PAYING THESE FEES, THERE ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB, OR TALK TO MRS BROWN! WE ARE HERE TO ASSIST YOU IN PROVIDING A HIGH QUALITY BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM.

Question: Where does my child enter the Empower Upper Grades Campus at the Linda Vista Elementary site?

Answer: Our entrance is through a side gate, near the intersection of Ulric and Osler.

Question: Which building does Empower occupy at Linda Vista Elementary?

Answer: We occupy the south facing building, closest to the side gate, near the staff parking and cafeteria tables.

Question: How do we enter the Empower Upper Grades Site (Grades 2-6)  at Linda Vista Elementary once the side gate is locked?

Answer: There will be a sign posted with our school phone number at the gate. Please call the school office and a staff member will open the gate for you. Please allow yourself some time if you need to pick up your child for an appointment.

Question: Where do we park to access the Empower Upper Grades Site (Grades 2-6) at Linda Vista Elementary?

Answer: We were provided with a limited number of spaces for staff only. Parents can park on the street and walk their children in. Or, as staff or volunteers are available, there is a drop-off zone in front of the gate.

Question: How do we access the Empower Primary Grades Site (K-1) at the Boys and Girls Club during construction?

Answer: There is an entrance through the gym. We will close this every morning at 8:30am. To enter our location, you can call the school office and someone will come to the door. Or you can ring the doorbell located outside the gym, stand in front of the camera, and you can speak into it, and we can talk to you. This is temporary through the end of October, as the building is being remodeled. We value student safety above all and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this temporary inconvenience.

Question: I was unable to attend the orientation on Friday, but want to complete the forms. What should I do?

Answer: You have one more opportunity to get these forms completed before the school year begins, you can stop by our new parent orientation taking place on Wednesday 8/22 from 5pm-6pm in the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND THE FULL ORIENTATION, you can just let the staff know you are a returning parent and need to complete the forms for next year.

If you are unable to attend the orientation, the forms will be available at both offices on the first day of school. With so much to do before the first day of school on Monday, we won’t be able to accommodate drop-ins.

Thank you for taking the time to read these important updates, we are so excited for the next school year!  Please save our office number in your contacts: 858-292-1304 so you can contact us as needed.

Yours in empowering healthy global leaders,

Mrs. Brown

BROWN!

LCAP- Your Input Is Needed!

California has a new system for funding schools using a Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). As part of the new system, every school is required to develop a plan to address the State’s Eight Priorities for education (this is called the Local Control Accountability Plan- LCAP). The LCAP aligns Empower Charter School’s educational goals with financial resources.

As part of the LCAP, we are gathering parent, student, staff, and community input via an anonymous survey. We appreciate you taking a few minutes to share your feedback with us. The data used will help shape our school’s goals and priorities for the upcoming year.

La Encuesta

At the end of the school year, Empower will create an annual update that shows our progress towards the goals and actions in the plan. We will share this update with our stakeholders.

Enrollment Process 2015-16

It’s that time of year again, our enrollment window has officially opened! How exciting to have received so much interest already!

If you have sent us an inquiry, we appreciate your patience as we have received a large volume of e-mails from interested parents.

Enrollment

Read on to learn about the 6 steps to enroll at our school!

Step 1- Complete an enrollment form between Jan 26, 2015 and April 30, 2015.

Step 2- Attend a school orientation/tour (offered on select Tuesdays). Click here to sign up for a tour.

Step 3- In May, we will contact you to let you know your child’s admission status. All children are admitted as space allows. If any grade level receives more applications than we have space for, Empower will hold a public random drawing to determine admission for the impacted grade level.  More information is below relating to the details of the public random drawing.

Step 4- After admission, a parent or guardian must complete and/or provide all documents required for enrollment in a public school including but not limited to immunization records, proof of residency, birth certificate, release of records, emergency medical information form, and a home language survey.

Step 5- After admission, for parents enrolling their child in the dual-language immersion program, the school will conduct small group informational meetings. The meeting will explain what to expect from a child learning in two languages and will provide strategies to support the child. Many different appointment times will be offered to accommodate a wide range of schedules.

Step 6- After admission, the student and the parents must sign statements indicating that they are familiar with and agree to abide by all policies and procedures set forth in the Parent and Student Handbooks.

Details Regarding the Public Random Drawing

  • Children of current full-time staff members
  • To maintain and strengthen the dual immersion model, Spanish-speaking students will be recruited and will be given preferential admission up to 50% of the positions available in each grade.
  • All other in-district students

2. Residents outside the boundaries of San Diego Unified School District

  • Siblings of current students
  • Children of founding members or founding trustees of the Charter School (not to exceed 10% of total enrollment)

  • All other out-of-district students

3. All other students as permitted by law

Rules and Procedures for Public Random Lottery

• All interested parties will know, prior to the holding of the lottery, how many openings are available in the school for each Spanish pathway and in the different grades served by the school.

• The lottery will take place on the school’s campus in a facility large enough to allow all interested parties to observe the drawing, or at another public venue near the school large enough to accommodate all interested parties.

• Interested parties will complete an enrollment form during the Open Enrollment Period from Jan 1st-April 30th in order to participate in the lottery, if one is needed.

• The lottery will take place on a weekday evening or other time when most interested parties are available, within 30 days of closing the open enrollment period.

• The lottery shall draw names from pools of ballots differentiated by grade level and Spanish pathway desired.

• Applicants will be admitted in the order their names are drawn at random.

• Grade level vacancies are filled in priority order.

• Once capacity has been reach for a grade, the names are placed on a waiting list in the order in which they were drawn.

• An adult citizen of good standing, not otherwise employed by the School, will testify in writing, under penalty of perjury, that he or she personally witnessed the lottery pursuant to the above, and that it was random, public and fairly executed as described above. This documentation will be on file in the ECS main office and available upon request.

• All applicants who are admitted to the school will receive notification in writing by U.S. mail and will receive five business days to respond to the Office Manager either in writing, in person or by phone, fax or e-mail of their intention to accept or decline the offer for enrollment. If there is no response after five business days, a phone call will be made to the prospective applicant on two separate occasions and then the vacancies will be considered declined and the application will be withdrawn and will be offered to the next student on the waiting list.

• Vacancies that become available during the school year will be filled in order from the numbered applicants on the waiting list. In the event there are no applicants on the waiting list, new students may apply to enter the school. The parent/guardian of a new student after the school year has started will be required to attend one orientation/informational meeting with the Executive Director or another designated staff member to ensure communication of the school’s mission, educational program, and requirements.

• All waiting lists extinguish annually at the end of the School’s formal academic year, or as otherwise determined by the ECS Board of Trustees.
